As part of our mission to provide you with sexual health resources and recommendations you can trust, we’ve enlisted the help of some ‘official’ contributors (we still welcome guest posts, short stories, and interviews from others). Our official contributors range in expertise from Sexologists to STD Testing Experts and help us ensure that the information we’re providing is both medically accurate and comprehensive.
Their perspectives add to the depth and support we offer around the wealth of questions we receive throughout our website. As such, we are delighted to have these contributors on-board. Their work outside of The STD Project is exceptional (we’re rather discerning about who we select for this role), and we encourage you to check them out via the links they have provided in their profiles below.

Internist, Dr. Marina Gafanovich, MD
An acclaimed researcher and medical practitioner and rated the #1 internist in New York, Dr. Gafanovich holds a medical degree from the famous Sackler School of Medicine. While completing her residency at Manhasset’s North Shore University Hospital, her dedication, hard-work, and skill led to the position of Hospital Care Attending Physician. Through extensive research, Dr. Gafanovich opened new areas in the field of competitive reproductive technologies including work using in vitro fertilization.
Dr. Gafanovich is now working as a private medical practitioner on the Upper East Side. She is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan and New York Presbyterian Hospital and has assisted in the acceptance and integration of major insurance plans. Dr. Gafanovich is working on expanding her research in competitive medical science using both her prior research experience and private practice. Her primary focus, however, is on providing quality medical care to her patients while guiding those who need it through the medical assistance program.
Dr. Gafanovich believes in individualized care, because she knows that each disease has a fundamental cause which often differs from patient to patient. She also understands that everyone responds to an ailment in a different way psychosomatically. She believes quality of care is particularly imperative when handling issues encompassing sexually transmitted infections and diseases, and it is important to her that her patients are not only treated for the physical appearances of an ailment but the demonstrative characteristics of it too.
For more from Dr. Marina Gafanovich, you can visit her website My NYC Doctor, check out her Manhattan-based STD testing clinic, or if you’d like assistance with medical insurance or patient care, you can find her directly on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn.

Sexual Health Educator, Natasha Albury, MPH
Natasha Albury, MPH is an Advocate for equity and social justice, a Promoter of comprehensive sexual health education for youth and adults, and a Dark Chocolate Connoisseur!
After living as a globetrotting teacher in East Asia for many years, she returned to the States to earn her Masters in Public Health at Portland State University. In Oregon, she learned a lot about what sex education for schools should and could look like. She’s also trained as an ‘Our Whole Lives’ sexuality educator.
When Natasha was an AmeriCorps member long ago, she taught Abstinence-Based Sex Education, but since those days, she has given several presentations on the value and need for Comprehensive Sexual Health Education. She feels we are still far behind in providing essential life-skills to most of our nation’s youth because of the disparity in comprehensive sexual health education across the US.
Currently, Natasha is working as an ESL Instructor and moonlighting as a Condom-Fairy and Clean Works educator and volunteer for the Grand Rapids Red Project. You can contact Natasha Albury on LinkedIn to inquire about group presentations on sexual health issues or for family/individual consultations.
Social & Behavioral Health Expert, Janelle Knowlton, MPH
Janelle Knowlton, MPH strives to cultivate healthy attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors surrounding sexual health. While completing her BS in Health Education from the University of Arizona, Janelle traveled to Tanzania, Africa to teach HIV/AIDS education to youth and adults. During that time, Janelle developed an increased awareness toward the gaps in information surrounding sexual health and diseases such as HIV. She also became more receptive of how culture can influence a person’s perspective.
After working for a year in the mental health field as a Victim Advocate and Crisis Counselor, Janelle returned to school for her Masters in Public Health from Boston University’s School of Public Health. Her unique blend of experience and education allows her to view health problems through a multidimensional lens. She believes that every person is entitled to receive comprehensive sex education, because most people will be sexually active during their lives, and it is important that when they do, they have the knowledge to protect themselves.
As a recent graduate, Janelle spends her time volunteering for several agencies and is currently looking for work opportunities. You can find more information about Janelle Knowlton on her website or by visiting her on LinkedIn.
